When studying the new Faculty of Arts Building, we were inspired by the knowledge that would be shared in its future uses. The concept takes inspiration from the shape of an open book with pages oscillating from each end. This design is reserved and timeless, with an emphasis on wellness and passively intelligent functionality. The building’s form is derived through rational program stacking and an excellent landscape experience within its common courtyard, creating a world-class facility for a world-class campus.
We sought to create a building with a connective heart, facilitating a collaborative environment that promotes interactivity and knowledge flow. Our indoor garden is much more than a comfortable architectural option, a constant and present tribute, an appeal to the happiness of living a sustainable life in harmony with everything and everyone around us. An extraordinary human experience to guarantee learning and extraordinary personal growth as well.
We designed the space with the intention of the stairs being used as often as possible to encourage opportunities for chance meetings and discussion between students and faculty. Along with the central communication stair, the open-air atrium and indoor/outdoor break out spaces also offer ample spaces outside of the classroom for learning.
To strengthen the sense of visual continuity, the façades proportions and scale follow and mimic the existing Faculty of Arts building’s vertical datums. The main entrance is located on an existing pedestrian path that connects to the existing building offering students and faculty seamless access between them. The building location also allows for future development on the north side of the building, incorporating the existing bicycle path. We propose a minimalistic approach to site improvements to ensure ease of maintenance for the University and a reduced impact to the existing landscape. The use of native grasses and vegetation would highlight the relationship with the building’s surroundings, and using open jointed paved surfaces would aid in water retention.
